The Rainbow Fund was established in 2018 by alumnus James E. Gipson (C '66) for the benefit of degree seeking students at the College of Arts and Sciences who promote human equality, are active members of the Gender and Sexuality Alliance or participate in LGBTQ+ programming at The University of the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ. Eligibility has since been expanded to any queer identifying people on campus seeking financial assistance.
The Rainbow Fund in Honor of Bishop V. Gene Robinson (C’69) provides secondary financial support for “out-of-the-ordinary or special needs,” such as emergency travel, non-routine medical and dental expenses, expenses associated with study abroad, expenses associated with career preparation, and other non-tuition expenses not covered by other sources. Additionally, it can be used to enhance LGBTQ+ programming on campus. The mission of the fund is to promote the visibility, achievement, and overall advancement of the LGBTQ+ community at the University.
Queer individuals and active participants in Sewanee’s GSD–including Spectrum and the Q&A House–who are enrolled as full-time undergraduate students a may seek funds on a rolling basis by completing . Please note, funds are limited and repeat requests will ordinarily not be granted. Receipts will be required for reimbursement.
GSD leaders may apply for funds jointly or separately to enhance campus programming. Proposals from other groups regarding LGBTQ+ programming will likewise be considered. With that being said, we strongly encourage groups planning LGBTQ+ events to consult and collaborate with Spectrum and the Q&A House when possible. Proposals may be submitted via at any point during the year and must include a description of the program and detailed budget with justification. Preference will be given to programs that will have a broad campus impact, but all ideas are welcomed and encouraged to be shared.
